How to Scan a QR Code on iPhone (No App Needed)
You point your iPhone camera at a QR code, nothing happens, and now you’re standing in a restaurant awkwardly Googling “how do I scan this thing.” It happens more than you’d think — mostly because a setting got flipped without you noticing.
Good news: iPhones have had built-in QR scanning since iOS 11. No app download needed. Here’s exactly how to use it, and what to do when it doesn’t cooperate.
How to Scan a QR Code on iPhone
Method 1: Camera App (easiest)
- Open the Camera app directly from your home screen or lock screen.
- Point it at the QR code — no need to tap anything.
- A yellow notification banner pops up at the top or bottom of the screen.
- Tap the banner to open the link, add a contact, connect to WiFi, or whatever the code contains.
Method 2: Control Center
- Swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Center.
- Tap the QR code scanner icon (if you’ve added it — more on that below).
- Point and scan the same way.
Method 3: Siri
Just say “Hey Siri, scan QR code” and Siri opens the scanner for you.
Why It’s Not Working (and How to Fix It)
If pointing your camera at a code does nothing, it’s almost always one of these:
- QR code scanning is turned off. Go to Settings > Camera and make sure “Scan QR Codes” is toggled on. This is the #1 cause of “my iPhone won’t scan QR codes.”
- You’re in a third-party camera app. Snapchat, Instagram, or other custom camera apps don’t trigger the native scanner. Switch to the actual Camera app.
- Low light or glare. The camera needs to clearly see all three corner squares of the code. Move to better lighting or tilt the phone to cut glare.
- Too close or too far. Back up until the whole code fits in frame with a little margin around it — usually 6 to 12 inches away works for printed codes.
- Screen protector interference. Rare, but a scratched or foggy screen protector over the camera lens can blur the image enough to break scanning.
- The code itself is damaged. If more than about 30% of a QR code is obscured, torn, or low-resolution, it may not scan at all — that’s not your phone’s fault.
Add the Scanner to Control Center
For faster access, go to Settings > Control Center and add “QR Code Scanner.” Now it’s one swipe and one tap away — no need to open the full Camera app first.
Real Use Case
Say you’re at a conference and every booth has a QR code linking to a demo or signup form. Instead of typing URLs or downloading a scanner app on the spot, you just swipe down, tap the Control Center icon, and scan each one in seconds. That’s the whole point of built-in scanning — zero friction.
Wrapping Up
Scanning a QR code on iPhone doesn’t need a special app — the Camera app already does it, as long as the setting is turned on. If you’re troubleshooting a code that won’t scan at all, or you want to test one before printing it, try it out with our QR Scanner online — it works right in your browser, no app required either.
