What Is a UPC-A Barcode?

UPC-A is the 12-digit retail barcode used on virtually every product sold in the US and Canada. The digits encode the manufacturer ID, the product number, and a final check digit that validates the code. If you’ve ever bought anything in a North American store, you’ve seen UPC-A — it’s the barcode the cashier scans.

Our free UPC barcode scanner online reads UPC-A codes through your camera or from an uploaded image, with no app and no signup.

UPC-A vs EAN-13: What’s the Difference?

A UPC-A barcode is a subset of EAN-13: add a leading zero to any 12-digit UPC-A and you get a valid 13-digit EAN-13. EAN-13 is the international standard (used everywhere outside North America); UPC-A is the North American standard. Modern scanners read both, and our tool decodes either format automatically.

If you scan a US product and get 12 digits, that’s UPC-A. If you get 13 digits, that’s EAN-13 — same product, different regional encoding.

How to Scan a UPC Barcode Online

Allow camera access and hold the barcode 10–20 cm from your lens, or upload a clear photo of the code. The decoded 12-digit number appears instantly as copyable text. For damaged or blurry codes, a flat, well-lit photo scans more reliably than a live camera feed. All processing happens in your browser — nothing is uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

What is a UPC-A barcode?

UPC-A is the 12-digit retail barcode printed on almost every product sold in the United States and Canada. The first digits identify the manufacturer, the middle digits identify the product, and the final digit is a check digit used to verify the scan.

How do I scan a UPC-A barcode online?

Open this page over HTTPS, allow camera access, and point your camera at the barcode — or upload a photo of it. The tool decodes the 12-digit number instantly, with nothing installed and nothing uploaded.

What does the check digit mean?

The last digit of a UPC-A code is calculated from the first 11 digits using the GS1 Mod-10 formula. If it does not match, the code was misread or misprinted. This scanner verifies it automatically and warns you when the printed check digit is wrong — a feature most free scanners skip.

What is the difference between UPC-A and EAN-13?

UPC-A has 12 digits and is used in the US and Canada; EAN-13 has 13 digits and is used internationally. A UPC-A code is mathematically identical to an EAN-13 code with a leading zero, which is why this scanner shows you both forms. For EAN-13 and other retail formats, try our EAN-13 barcode scanner.
